AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL:
U.A. CANADIAN BUSINESS MANAGERS and LOCAL UNIONS
November 18, 2009
Dear Sirs and Brothers:
Re: Upcoming turnaround activities and U.A. manpower requirements for Alberta (March to June, 2010)
I have identified to all of you, on a number of recent occasions, that U.A. Local Union #488-Edmonton will be experiencing massive demands for manpower on their upcoming turnaround schedules that will run concurrently from March to June, 2010. As noted previously, this shutdown season will be much larger in scope than we have ever witnessed in the past and as such may require as many as two thousand five (2500) more UA personnel than our Alberta based labour pool can currently provide. As a high percentage of these required tradesmen will be within our trade classifications it is imperative that we know in advance the approximate numbers of available members within your Local Unions that will be interested in fulfilling these manpower orders during this critical timeframe.
In order that we can fully ascertain in advance the numbers for specific U.A. trade requirements that your Local Union can provide I have included the attached information that has been supplied by the Alberta client community for your perusal. I would strongly request that each of you share this attached information with your Local Union members in order that we can identify in advance the specific numbers of welders, pipefitters, instrument mechanics etc. that would be coming to Alberta to man these turnarounds based upon the attached general information. In doing so I would further strongly request that you do not include the numbers of your traveler members that are currently in Alberta at this time as they would most probably stay and/or return for the shutdown season.
Finally, I would strongly urge each Business Manager to e-mail Brother Larry Matychuk (larry@local488.ca) with a list of your anticipated available members, by category, at your earliest opportunity. I am further requesting that the U.A. Canadian representatives for your area do a complete follow-up on this matter in order that we have this information compiled in as timely a manner as possible.
I would like to thank you in advance for your prompt response to this necessary and important undertaking. With this concerted support we will hopefully ensure that our success in manning these upcoming turnarounds will return sizable dividends on both maintenance and construction work into future!
Fraternally Yours,
John Telford
